In 2021, the DRSC supported passage of legislation in the Illinois General Assembly to allow funding for safety treatments to deter trespassing on railroads away from highway- railroad crossings.

This new law will save lives and help prevent injuries. Most rail safety measures addressed hazards that were located directly at highway-railroad grade crossings. However, since 1997, more deaths occur on railroad rights-of-way, away from crossings than at actual grade crossings.
